An F97 code is a protection fault that triggers when the compressor’s discharge temperature runs too high. The compressor is the heart of your outdoor unit, and this protection exists to shut the system down before sustained overheating causes lasting damage to it.
More often than not, this points to low refrigerant gas rather than a homeowner-fixable issue, since insufficient refrigerant makes the compressor work harder and run hotter. Restricted refrigerant flow elsewhere in the system, or a compressor that’s beginning to fail, can also be behind the fault.
Send us the code and a photo of the display, and a Ford & Doonan technician will get back to you. Please don't reset the unit before you take the photo.
